§1Early life & training
Swapnasundari was born in Chennai1 into a family in which music was a daily discipline; she began vocal practice as a small child and dance training soon after.5 She trained in Kuchipudi under Pasumarthi Seetharamaiah, Yeleswarapu Suryaprakasa Sarma and Vempati Chinna Satyam,3 and made her professional debut at the age of fifteen.6
§2On stage
Through the 1980s and 1990s she was a leading presence in both Kuchipudi and Bharatanatyam.2 She sings as the lead vocalist for her own productions and recorded Kuchipudi music in her own voice.3 She is the founder-director of the Kuchipudi Dance Centre in Delhi.1
§3Traditions
She uses the term Āgama Bharatam for the ritual dance practices associated with Āgamic worship.8
§4Reviving Vilasini Natyam
Her research into the dance of the Telugu temple and court traditions led her to learn from its last hereditary exponents, including Maddula Lakshminarayana.2 With the historian and poet Dr. Arudra and a panel of scholars, the revived tradition was given the name Vilasini Natyam.4
In 1996 she performed Vilasini Natyam within the rituals of worship at the Sri Ranganatha Swamy temple near Hyderabad, returning dance to temple ceremony; she has since danced there annually during its Brahmotsavam.34
